The paid charts are full of narrow tools at 4.7 and above, while the free giants in the same category sit at 3.0

Spent an evening reading the top paid list on the Android side rather than the free one, because almost nobody does, and the contrast with the free charts is sharper than I expected.

What is actually up there: a car diagnostics tool with about 4.6 million purchases, an automation tool at 2.6 million, an NFC utility at 570k rated 4.7, a notification manager at 98k rated 4.7, a comic reader at 110k rated 4.9, an e-reader at 370k rated 4.8. Narrow, unfashionable, sold once for the price of a coffee.

Now the same store's free side. A PDF reader with 18 million installs and nearly 5 million of them recent sits at 3.4. Another at 2.3 million installs sits at 3.0.

So one part of the store has enormous demand and terrible satisfaction, and another part has modest volume and ratings the free apps cannot buy at any price.

Two caveats before anyone quits their job. Paid app ratings are self selected: the people rating already decided to pay, so the grumpiest segment filtered itself out at the door. And install bands are wide, so treat every number here as an order of magnitude rather than a figure.

What survives both caveats is the shape. There is a living market for a narrow tool done properly and sold once, and the huge free categories are being served badly enough that people say so in public, at scale, for years.

Volume is the part that decides whether this is a business, though. A one time purchase at three pounds means you need a lot of new strangers every month forever, and you get no second payment from anyone who already loves you. The 4.9 rating is lovely and it does not compound.

The ones that try tend to appear in my review pulls for the wrong reasons. Pulling the rug on people who already bought once is the single most reliable way to turn a 4.8 into a 3.9 in a month.

The self selection caveat is doing more work than you are giving it credit for. A paywall is a filter on who gets to be disappointed. Put the same PDF reader behind three pounds and its rating goes up without one line of code changing, because the people who would have rated it 1 never arrive.

Agreed that it lifts the number. I do not think it explains a gap of 1.5 stars, because the complaints under the free ones are specific and repetitive: ads on open, ads between pages, a subscription prompt on a file you opened locally. Those are not the reviews of people who would have paid and did not.

That is the right test and it moves me. The content of the complaints is about monetisation choices rather than about the product being free, which is a different thing.

A comic reader at 4.9 and 110k sales. Somebody found their people and just stayed there.

Worth adding that the free giants are rated by a population that includes everyone who ever downloaded it by accident from a search result. The paid ones are rated by people who went and found them. Different products, different crowds, same chart.

Do these paid tools ever move to subscription later?
