What is Meta Muse, and should you trust it?

Three people sent me the same app this week and it is apparently top of the charts here. I had not heard of it a fortnight ago and now it is everywhere, which is usually the point at which I want somebody to explain what it actually does before I install it.

What is it, what is it for, and what is the catch? I am less interested in whether it is fun than in what it gets from me in exchange.

The pattern is worth naming before the specifics, because it repeats every few months. An app goes from nowhere to the top of a chart in about ten days, everybody you know sends it to you at once, and the coverage is all about what it can do and none of it about what it takes.

So the useful question is the one you asked. What does it get in exchange. For anything in this category that means: what is it allowed to read, where does what you give it end up, and is the content you make with it yours.

Where do you actually find that out? The listing says almost nothing.

The store page has a data disclosure section that is more honest than the marketing, and the permissions it requests on install tell you more again. Then search for whether anything you upload is used for training, which is the clause people most often find out about afterwards.

Installed it on Friday out of curiosity. It is competent and it is clearly built to be shared, which is most of why it is at the top of the chart rather than because it is better than the alternatives.

Worth separating those two things. Being number one measures how shareable something is, not how good it is. The install curve on anything this viral is a marketing achievement and tells you nothing about whether you will still be using it in March.
