Why can I not buy an LED bulb for my oven? Everything else in the house has been swapped over.

The oven light is the last incandescent bulb in the house and it goes about once a year. Every LED I have found is explicitly rated to 60°C or so, which is obviously useless inside an oven.

  1. What specifically stops an LED working in there?
  2. Do oven-safe LEDs exist at all, given some new ovens seem to have them?
  3. Is the old-style bulb actually a problem worth solving?

    The blocker is the electronics, not the light-emitting part.

    An LED needs a driver — a small circuit that converts mains voltage into the low-voltage current the diode wants. That circuit contains electrolytic capacitors and semiconductors, and those are what die: a typical electrolytic capacitor is rated to 105°C at best, and its life halves roughly every 10°C above rating. An oven at 200°C destroys it in short order.

    The diode itself also loses efficiency and shifts colour as it heats, and its own lifetime collapses, but the driver fails first and by a wide margin.

    Which is exactly why the old bulb is still there: an incandescent has nothing in it but a tungsten filament in a glass envelope, and it is already running at over 2,000°C internally. An oven is not a hostile environment to it — it barely notices.

      "The oven is not hostile to it, it barely notices" is a good way to put it. I had been thinking of the incandescent as the primitive option rather than the one suited to the job.

    Yes, they exist, and the way manufacturers do it answers your question by implication: they move the driver out of the oven.

    On appliances with LED cavity lighting, the light source sits behind a heat-resistant window in the cavity wall and the electronics live outside it, in the cooler part of the appliance. Sometimes it is not even in the wall — a few designs pipe light in.

    That is not something you can retrofit into a fitting designed for a screw-in bulb, which is why you cannot buy one for your oven and can for a new appliance.

    The screw-in "oven safe LED" products that do appear are almost always rated to 250°C for the glass envelope while the driver is not, or are meant for a warming drawer rather than an oven. Read what the temperature rating applies to before buying, because the packaging is frequently written to be misread.

    For question 3 — honestly, no, and the arithmetic is the reassuring part.

    An oven lamp is typically 15-25W, and it is only on while the door is open or while you are watching something, which totals a few minutes a day. Call it ten minutes daily at 25W and you are at about 1.5 kWh a year. That is a rounding error next to the oven's own consumption, which is measured in hundreds of watt-hours per use.

    The replacement frequency is worth a look, though: an oven bulb dying every year is on the short side. They usually last several. If yours goes annually, the suspects are vibration from the door slamming, or the bulb being a cheap one, or a fitting that is not seating properly.

    Buying the right type — usually a 300°C-rated appliance lamp rather than a generic bulb — often fixes the yearly ritual on its own.

    Practical note when replacing it: let the oven cool completely, and use a dry cloth or glove rather than bare fingers on the glass.

    Skin oils on a hot-running envelope create a spot that heats unevenly and shortens the life — the same reason halogen bulbs are not meant to be handled. It is one of the more plausible explanations for a bulb that dies every year in a house where nobody has thought about it.
