Why is my string of hearts not pink?

Bought it because of the photos: trailing vines of little hearts blushing pink and cream. Mine has been going eleven months and it is green with silver marbling and purple undersides. Healthy, trailing well, just not pink.

It is in a bright east window and I have tried letting it dry out more. Is there something I am failing to give it, or is it not the plant I thought I was buying?

It is not the plant from the photos, and your description settles it. Green with silver marbling on top and purple undersides is the standard Ceropegia woodii, and that is exactly what it is supposed to look like. It does not turn pink. No amount of light will do it.

The pink one is sold as variegated, often labelled Variegata, and it has cream or white or pink edges on the leaves and pink stems. That is what the photos are. Yours is healthy and doing its job.

That is both a relief and mildly annoying. Is the variegated one harder to keep?

A bit, because it needs more light to hold its colour and less chlorophyll means slower growth. In low light the pink fades to cream or green, new leaves come in greener and the vines go leggy with big gaps. Your east window with some morning sun would suit one well.

If you do get a variegated one, introduce brighter light gradually rather than moving it straight into direct sun, which scorches them. And expect the pink to live on new growth: older leaves fade, which is normal rather than a care failure.

In the dark months a grow light does more for the colour than anything else you can change.

Also watch for reversion. A variegated plant can push an all-green vine, and trimming it back keeps the variegated ones going.
