Nine hours a day at a desk, 34, no diagnosed back problem, just a low ache that arrives mid-afternoon. Current chair is a $280 mesh thing from a big-box store, three years old, and the foam under the seat has gone flat and hard. Everything I read says the expensive chairs are mostly a warranty and a badge. For anyone who has owned both — what changed at month six, not week one?
The warranty is not a badge if you actually use it. Herman Miller covers the Aeron for 12 years, rated for round-the-clock use, with no excluded parts. I had a gas cylinder replaced in year seven at no cost. Whether that maths works for you depends entirely on whether you'd otherwise buy three cheap chairs in the same period, which — three years in and already flat — you might.
Worth knowing that warranty is non-transferable, so a used chair doesn't come with it. Buy used for the chair itself, never for the coverage.
I sat in a very expensive chair for two years and my back still hurt. What actually fixed it was raising the monitor and walking for twenty minutes at lunch. A good chair stops a bad chair from hurting you. It does not make sitting for nine hours a healthy activity. Spend the first $150 getting the screen to eye level before you spend $1,200 on the thing under you.
Both things are true and people keep treating it as either/or. Fix the desk geometry first, then buy the chair that holds its shape. In that order, because the second one is expensive.
Adjustability is the thing that genuinely scales with price, and it only matters if you're an unusual size. I'm 1.58 m and almost every mid-range chair has a seat pan too deep for me, so the front edge pressed into the back of my thighs all day. Seat depth adjustment was the single feature I actually paid for, and it fixed a problem no amount of lumbar support was going to touch.
Sitting in it before you buy is not optional at that price. I bought a famous chair unseen because the internet loved it and hated the hard front edge inside a fortnight. Showrooms, second-hand office liquidators, or a seller with a genuine trial window.
Nine hours is the problem. No chair solves nine hours.

Month six is exactly the right question to ask. What changed for me: the cheap chair's foam compressed unevenly, so its geometry drifted and I was slowly sitting in a slightly worse chair every week without noticing. The expensive one is the same shape now as it was three years ago. That's most of the answer — not comfort on day one, but the absence of slow decay you can't perceive while it's happening.

It's also why buying used matters. A ten-year-old good chair with a replaced seat pan is a better purchase than a new bad one, and it costs about the same.
