400-day French streak and I still couldn't order a coffee in Lille
Four hundred days, thirty minutes most evenings, and standing at an actual counter last month I produced nothing. The words were in there — I just could not get them out in the two seconds available. I have about £25 a month spare and I don't want to abandon the streak, because it's the only study habit that has ever survived contact with my life. What do I bolt onto it?

I finished the entire French course, took a placement test at a local school expecting B1, and got put in A2. Not really a knock on the app — that's roughly what the course is built to deliver. What moved me afterwards was concrete and cheap: audio lessons in the car on the commute, five minutes of shadowing a news clip in the kitchen, and one 30-minute conversation a week with a tutor. The conversation is the expensive part and it's the part that did the work.
