Two blocks and a strap or one bolster first with 40 to spend Props

Practising at home three times a week, mostly general vinyasa plus some yin on rest days. I have no props and I am currently using books and a dressing gown belt. Forty to spend. Is it two cork blocks and a strap, or one decent bolster? I am not flexible, and the yin sessions are where I struggle most to stay in anything for three minutes.

Blocks and a strap, and given you mentioned not being flexible it is not close. Blocks are the most useful prop by a distance because they bring the floor up to you in half the standing poses, and a strap replaces the belt for anything where you cannot reach your feet. A bolster is lovely and you can fake one with a rolled duvet or two firm cushions almost perfectly. You cannot fake a block with books, because books slide and have no grip.

The books do slide constantly, which I had assumed was my fault.

It is a books problem. Cork blocks grip both the floor and your hand, and it changes how confidently you can lean into them.

Foam over cork if you are putting a shoulder or a head on them, because cork is hard and for restorative work that matters. Cork wins where you want them not to compress under standing weight. At 40 a pair of foam blocks plus a strap plus change is the most flexible answer.

For yin specifically the bolster argument is stronger, but a rolled duvet inside a pillowcase genuinely works and I used one for two years. Spend money on the things you cannot improvise.

Get one block rather than two, plus a strap, and put the rest toward a better mat if yours is thin. A slippery mat ruins more poses than a missing block.

The mat is a cheap one and it does slide. Something to think about.
