cold email opens say 61% but i got 2 replies from 180 sends - is the open rate lying to me Deliverability

Separate domain, warmed it for three weeks, SPF/DKIM/DMARC all pass. 180 sends over nine days, hand-picked ops leads at 20-80 person agencies. My sending tool reports 61% opens, 4 link clicks, 2 replies, one of which was a polite no.

Every guide I read says a 60% open rate means the subject line is working and the body is the problem. But 61% feels impossible for cold email to strangers. Either that number is fake or opens just do not measure what I think they measure.

How do you tell the difference? Do you leave tracking on and treat it as a rough trend, or turn the pixel off and only count replies?

Ran cold for two different products. Both times the thing that moved the needle was volume down, research up.

At 20 sends a day with two real sentences of specifics at the top - something on their site, a job posting they have had open for six weeks, the tool they mention in their stack page - reply rate went from about 1% to somewhere between 5% and 7%. Same product, same offer, same signature.

The part people skip is that the first line has to prove you looked, and the ask has to be small enough to answer with one word. Not a demo, not 15 minutes. Something like: are you the person who deals with X, or is that someone else. People answer that even when they are not interested, and then you have a thread instead of a broadcast.

That number is mostly machines. Since iOS 15 Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-fetches the tracking pixel for mail delivered to Apple Mail users whether or not a human ever looks at it, and industry measurements now put roughly half of all recorded opens in that bucket. On a list skewed toward founders and ops people, who are heavily on Apple hardware, your share is probably higher than average.

So your real human open rate is likely somewhere in the high twenties to mid thirties, and there is no way to recover the exact figure from that data.

The ratios I actually watch on cold: replies per send, and positive replies per send. You are at 1.1% total, roughly 0.6% positive. That is low but it is not a catastrophe - it is the number of a list that is broadly right and a message that has not earned an answer yet. Fix the message, not the subject line.

Worth adding that Gmail proxies and caches images too, so an open can be logged by infrastructure before a person reads anything. Between that and MPP the pixel is a delivery signal at best, not an engagement one.

That explains why my opens jumped when I started sending to more senior titles. I assumed better targeting. It was just more iPhones.

Mild disagreement with the top answer on one point: I would not keep the pixel at all, even as a trend line.

A tracking pixel is a remote image in an email that is otherwise plain text and pretending to be personal. It gives filters one more thing to score, it makes your HTML heavier than the message you claim to be sending, and the number it produces is now noise. You are paying a small deliverability tax for a metric you cannot interpret.

Turn it off. Put a link in email two or three, not in the first one, and track clicks on that. Clicks still mean something because prefetchers mostly do not follow links, though some corporate security scanners do, so even that needs a sanity check against actual traffic in your analytics.

Corporate link scanners are real and they will hit every URL in the message within seconds of delivery. If you see a click at 03:12 with no session in your logs, that is a scanner, not a prospect.

Opens have been decorative for years. Judge the campaign on replies per 100 sends and nothing else. If that is under 2 after 200 sends, your list is wrong or your offer is wrong, and no subject line rewrite fixes either.

Before you rewrite anything, check what happened to the 180. Sending tools report opens loudly and bounces quietly. Pull your hard bounce rate - if it is above about 2% your list is not verified and some mailbox providers are already discounting you. Also check whether anything landed in Promotions or in a quarantine, which will not show as a bounce and will not show as an open either.

And nine days for 180 sends from a three-week-old domain is aggressive. I ramp new domains at 10-15 a day for the first fortnight, and never send from the domain the product lives on.

I just went through this and the change that worked for me felt stupidly small, so I will over-explain it.

My first email pitched. Three sentences on what the tool does, a link, and a request for a call. Zero replies out of about 90. I rewrote it so the entire body was one question about how they currently handle the thing, no link at all, no product name in the body, product name only in my signature. Same list, next 90 sends, seven replies and four of them turned into conversations.

My theory is that a link in a cold first email tells the reader this is a campaign, and a question tells them it is a person. Also two of the seven replies were people telling me their actual process, which was more useful than any of the calls.
