I have a 200 day streak in a habit app and my life has not changed - has tracking become the habit?
Two hundred days of ticking boxes. The app is beautiful, the streak is unbroken, and I am fairly sure I am no different than when I started.
What I have noticed is that I optimise for the tick. On a bad day I will do the smallest version that counts, two minutes of the thing, one page, a token effort: and mark it done. The streak is intact and nothing happened.
I also feel real resistance to changing any of the habits, because that would break the streaks, which is obviously backwards.
Is tracking worth doing at all, or have I built an elaborate way of feeling productive? And if it is worth doing, what should I be tracking instead?

My position after several rounds of this: track one thing, on paper, and only while you need it.
Why one: tracking six habits means the tracking is itself a daily chore, and the chore is what survives when motivation drops. That is how you end up with your situation - a perfect record of a system maintaining itself.
Why paper: an app makes tracking frictionless and elaborate, which sounds good and is the problem. Streaks, badges, statistics, reminders: all of it makes the record more rewarding than the behaviour. A mark on a wall calendar carries none of that.
Why only while you need it: tracking is scaffolding. It is for the phase where the behaviour needs a decision every day. Once it is automatic, the tracking is pure overhead and you should stop, which is a thing almost nobody does because the streak makes stopping feel like failure.
The test for whether to keep tracking something: if you stopped recording it, would you still do it? If yes, stop recording it. If no, keep the record and be honest that the habit is not established yet.
And on your token days: those are not cheating, they are the system working as designed. Do not feel bad about them; change what you are counting.

One line a day on paper does the same job and it cannot be optimised. There is no streak, no badge, and nothing to protect, so the smallest version stops being worth doing.
The interesting side effect: writing what I did rather than ticking that I did it made the bad days visible, and the bad days were the information.
