My camera offers both a mechanical and an electronic shutter and I cannot see any difference
The camera I recently bought lets me choose between a mechanical shutter and an electronic one. I have taken a few frames each way and the results look the same to me.
I assume that if one were simply better, the manufacturer would not have included both, so each must be better at something.
What are the actual trade-offs, and how do I know which situations call for which?

For a static subject in steady light they genuinely produce the same picture, which is why your test showed nothing. The differences appear in specific conditions.
