The check that separates the two explanations: look at battery health before and after. An update does not change the health figure, so if it dropped a few percent over the same period you have an ageing battery that happened to cross a threshold in the same week.
That is the honest confounder in almost every one of these threads, and nobody controls for it because the update is the more interesting story.
