Cuts into the good fabric. Sometimes regrets it.

The pattern lists three fabrics I do not have and I have two metres of something I love, how do you judge a substitution?

The thing that unlocked this for me: a shirt dress in drapey viscose is not a failed shirt dress, it is a different garment that happens to use the same pattern. Softer, less structured, hangs closer to the body.

So the real question is not whether the substitution is correct, it is whether you want that garment. If you do, cut it. If you wanted the crisp version, no amount of technique gets there from viscose.
