Six pens in rotation and never flushed is fine right up until it is not, and the two symptoms you described are exactly the early stage: slightly less wet, slow to start.
That is not neglect becoming damage yet. It is the point at which a flush restores it completely. Leave it another year and you are into soaking and picking at a feed with a bulb syringe.
