On material: an old pair of jeans is the best patch fabric there is, because it has already shrunk and softened and it moves with the garment. New denim is stiff and the stitching line becomes the next wear point.

Four pairs patched and the timing point is the one that changed my results completely. A patch onto thin-but-whole fabric lasts; a patch bridging an actual hole is stitching into two edges that are already failing, and it opens again next to the repair.
Now I patch the moment it goes fuzzy, which feels premature and is the whole trick.
Knees good, seat good, thighs gone. Same on every pair I own and it is just where the friction is.
