Taking your own beans and grinder to a friend's flat is a genuinely good experiment and almost nobody does it.

The jug filter doing nothing is the part that confuses everyone, so worth restating plainly: it is designed for taste and chlorine, not for the minerals that matter here. It removes the thing you were not tasting and leaves the thing you were.
