Ask about unpaid leave, and ask badly-timed rather than never. Mine said no at first and yes six weeks later once cover was arranged.
The asymmetry is the point: worst case they say no and you resign as planned, which was your plan anyway. People skip it because it feels like showing your hand, and the downside is close to zero.
