When I walk down the stairs, where does my potential energy actually go?

The practical consequence for anyone who walks: descending is where the damage happens. Uphill is cardiovascular effort, downhill is repeated braking loads through the same tissue, which is why the day after a long descent is worse than after a long climb.

Poles help exactly because they take a share of the braking rather than because they help you balance.
