What rebinding a book actually costs, doing it yourself and paying someone

Worked in a bindery and the number that surprises people is how much of the cost is not the binding: it is the pulling and resewing. Taking a text block apart without damaging it is slow, careful work and it is most of the hours on the invoice.

That is why a recase is a fraction of the price. You are paying for skill applied to the part nobody sees.
