Soap terminology decoded, including the phrase that does not mean anything

The lye question comes up constantly and it is worth answering gently, because behind it is a real concern rather than ignorance.

What people are usually asking is whether any caustic material remains in the finished bar. It does not, once the reaction is complete and the bar has cured, which is the actual reassurance they want. Telling someone all soap is lye soap and stopping there is correct and unhelpful.

The other thing they sometimes mean is an old family bar that was harsh, which was usually harsh because it had no superfat, not because it had lye.
