The missing variable in most of these conversations is the reader's week rather than the book.
The same novel at a calm moment and at an exhausted one is two different experiences, and a book abandoned at page fifty in a bad month is not evidence about the book. I have gone back to three things I was sure I disliked and finished all of them.
Which suggests keeping a shelf of abandoned books rather than getting rid of them, and asking whether it was the wrong book or the wrong fortnight.
