Moved between the two and the rule in the second comment is the one that matters in practice: once refrigerated, keep refrigerating. Taking cold eggs out and leaving them on the counter causes condensation, and moisture on the shell is the thing the whole system is trying to avoid.
So the mistake is not choosing a system, it is switching one carton halfway.
