Bought five apps outright over the last few years and every one still works, which is the strongest argument in this thread and the hardest to find.
The catch is discovery: paid apps with no ads have no marketing budget, so they are invisible in the places people search. I found four of the five through a recommendation rather than a store listing, which is why the search keeps failing.
