Got properly ill alone in a country where I spoke nothing - what do experienced solo travellers arrange in advance?

One practical addition that is not on anyone's list: in a lot of countries the pharmacy is the correct first stop, not a doctor, and pharmacists are far more likely to speak some English than anyone at a walk-in clinic.

For the ordinary version of being unwell abroad, that is a ten minute problem rather than an insurance problem, and knowing it saves you from escalating something that does not need escalating.
