There's a small real component too. At night your neighbours are quiet, the fridge cycles less, and traffic drops, so your effective noise floor is lower and you hear more detail in the quiet stuff. That's part of why the late mix feels rich and the morning one feels flat and busy.

This is what I'd do. Went from RwLock to a sharded map on a similar workload and the p99 got noticeably tighter, mostly because writes stopped occasionally blocking a burst of readers.
If your merge logic gets long, consider an enum for the decision, enum Action { Merge, Push }, computed in one function that takes &[Event] and returns the action. Keeps the borrow inside a function boundary where it obviously ends and makes the loop body two lines.
Also try backing the singer off to 30-35cm and turning the preamp up. At 20cm you're getting a big dose of proximity effect and the mic's own low-mid lift, and lots of people fight the result with EQ without realising they created it. If the singer can't stay put at that distance, a bit of compression on the way in helps more than the closer position does.
Arc fixed it. The chain does say it, I just wasn't reading the middle 40 lines because the top and bottom looked like noise.
Noted, I have two of those in another module that currently only run on the local set. That's a bug waiting to happen.
Also check your mix in mono at low volume through a single small speaker. If the bass vanishes there too, you may have phase problems in the low end rather than a room problem, especially if you're layering kicks or using a stereo widener on anything below 200Hz.
Agreed, and if the branches are the problem, itertools::Either gets you back to a concrete type without the box. Worth knowing before you reach for dyn.
Almost certainly the preamp running out of headroom. That style of dynamic mic has low output and needs somewhere around 60dB of clean gain for speech, which is more than most budget interfaces have on tap without their own noise floor becoming audible. The standard fix is an inline gain booster between the mic and the interface, which gives you 25dB of quiet gain and lets you run your interface preamp at half its current setting. It's the single most common cause of exactly this complaint.
Agreed, and wear a mask and long sleeves while cutting the slabs. It's not dangerous but it's deeply itchy.
