Fourteen years on the site and this is not surprising from the inside, but the number is worse than I would have guessed.
The mechanism is not mysterious. New questions used to get views from the front page and from Google within days. The front page traffic has collapsed and Google now sends people to the fourteen-year-old answer, which is usually right. So a new question is competing with the archive of the same site, and losing.
Self-answering is the correct move now and it feels absurd to say that out loud.
