Does tuning to a slightly lower reference pitch actually affect listeners, or is it a myth?

There is a genuine musical argument for lower tuning that gets lost in the mystical framing, and it is worth rescuing.

For singers, a slightly lower pitch makes a demanding part easier. Repertoire written when performing pitch was lower is genuinely harder at the modern standard, and this is a real and much-discussed issue in some vocal music.

For period instruments, playing at a lower pitch is about historical practice and about what the instruments were built for — gut strings under less tension, different tone.

Both are legitimate reasons to tune lower and neither has anything to do with 432 in particular. Ensembles that do this typically use pitches associated with the repertoire's period rather than that number.

So if somebody wants a warmer sound or an easier vocal line, tuning down is a reasonable choice with reasons behind it. The reasons just are not the ones usually given.

How do you unlearn a mistake you have practised into place?

The other half is the one people find hardest to accept: slow enough that the mistake cannot happen.

Not slow-ish. Slow enough that you have time to see the next note, place the hand deliberately, and play it correctly with complete certainty. If a mistake occurs, you were still too fast.

The reason this matters is that repetition strengthens whatever you actually did. Practising at a speed where you fail half the time reinforces both versions, and the wrong one has a head start. Every correct slow repetition is a vote for the right version, and votes only count if they are correct.

Then increase the tempo in genuinely small steps, and drop back the moment an error appears. Most people go up in steps far too large and spend weeks at a speed that is producing errors.

Classical guitarists roll the finger for vibrato like a violinist — how does that work on a fretted instrument?

Your analysis of the violin is right and your instinct about the guitar is right too — the sounding length genuinely does not change. The movements look similar and the mechanisms are different.

On a fretted instrument the pitch changes because of tension. The string is stretched between the fret and the bridge. Pressing and rocking the finger changes how much the string is displaced and stretched, and a string under more tension sounds sharper.

So the rolling motion is not moving the stopping point, it is modulating the stretch. That is also why the effect is subtler on a guitar than on a violin, and why it is more effective on higher frets and thinner strings, where a given displacement produces a larger relative change in tension.

What key should I pick if I want a whole room to sing along?

Two practical additions that matter as much as the key.

Volume helps more than pitch. People sing when they cannot hear themselves clearly. A room that is well accompanied, or where a few confident voices are audible, will sing far more than a quiet one at a perfect pitch. If you can only fix one thing, fix that.

Start lower than feels right to you. If you are leading, you are probably a more confident singer than most of the room, and the key that feels comfortable to you is usually a little high for them. Erring low costs you some brilliance and gains you participation.

And if there is any doubt, ask somebody in the room to sing the first line back at whatever is comfortable for them. That is a two-second experiment that beats any general rule.
