No softener, but I definitely swish it around a fair bit. Will try just letting it soak.

So the pilling actually stops at some point? I assumed shaving would just thin the sweater out over time.
Second this. Check the lining and the underarms before buying though — that's where old coats die, and relining costs more than most used coats are worth.
