"Cannot be opted out of" is the cleanest statement of it I have seen. That is exactly the difference from most other trail annoyances.

The intensity comes from what people go there for, and it is worth taking seriously rather than treating as snobbery.
A large part of the point of walking in wild country is the soundscape — wind, water, birds, and the particular quality of quiet you cannot get anywhere else. It is not background to the experience, for many people it is a substantial part of the experience itself.
That explains your comparison with conversation, which is the interesting half of the question. Conversation is intermittent and it stops. People fall quiet, they pass you, the sound is variable and human and it ends. Recorded music is continuous, it does not respond to the environment, and it masks everything underneath for its entire duration.
So it is not simply louder. It occupies the whole band, continuously, and it is the specific thing many people travelled a long way to get away from.
Worth adding a practical consequence for anyone moving from indoors to outdoors, since that is the transition where this matters.
The outdoor fall is longer and it is not the only difference. Rope stretch, the belayer's position, and the possibility of swinging into something all change the picture. Clipping from a bad position — reaching up with slack out while standing on poor feet — is where people get hurt, and gyms rarely produce that situation.
The skills that need explicit attention are judging when to clip and when to keep moving, and belaying with a much greater awareness of where the climber will end up. Those are learnable and they are not automatically transferred from indoor experience, which is the part that catches strong gym climbers out.
The vent is the main fix. Two supporting measures make a large difference alongside it:
Keep the seat closed. Not for smell alone — a closed lid means the only path into the pit is the vent, and the vent is screened. A self-closing lid is worth fitting because nobody remembers.
Add dry carbon material after use. Sawdust, wood shavings, dry leaves, peat. This is the composting-toilet principle and it does two things at once: it covers the surface so flies cannot lay on it, and it shifts the pit towards aerobic decomposition, which smells far less than the anaerobic kind. A bucket and a scoop beside the seat is all the infrastructure needed.
Between a vent and a cover material, most huts go from unusable in July to unremarkable.
It is worth resisting the framing that this is an unusually reckless thing that other climbing is not, because that framing does not survive contact with the sport.
Moving unroped on easier ground is routine in mountaineering, where the terrain is less technical and the exposure is greater. Plenty of accepted practice carries substantial risk. The line people draw is not really about roped versus unroped; it is about competence relative to the difficulty, and about margin.
Which points at the question worth asking instead of the categorical one: is the person operating well within their ability, on terrain they know, in conditions they have assessed? A climber on ground far below their limit is making a different decision from one at their limit, even though both are unroped.
That distinction usually explains why experienced climbers react calmly to some instances and badly to others.
Two more that work without needing to read contours:
Zoom out until you find the sea. Crude and effective. Follow the water until it reaches an ocean, a large lake, or a river you recognise. Everything drains somewhere, and once you have the outlet, direction is fixed for the whole system.
Look for reservoirs and dams. A dam has a lake on the upstream side and a river on the downstream side, visible on any satellite imagery. Same for weirs and barrages. These are unmistakable direction markers and large rivers are full of them.
There are also web tools published by some national mapping and geological agencies that let you click a point on a river and highlight everything downstream of it. Where one exists for your area it is by far the fastest method, and it also shows you the whole catchment.
The behavioural half is worth stating clearly because it is reassuring rather than alarming: they are avoiding you deliberately and they are good at it.
A snake gains nothing from an encounter with something your size. Venom is metabolically expensive and produced for prey, and using it on a creature far too large to eat is pure loss. Every defensive behaviour — retreating, freezing, warning displays, dry bites — is arranged to avoid that expense.
Which is also the practical advice. Most bites occur when somebody steps directly on one, reaches blindly into a place they cannot see, or tries to handle or kill it. Walking normally, looking where you place hands and feet, and stepping onto logs rather than over them removes nearly all of the realistic risk.
So your decades of not seeing them is not luck. It is the system working.
