What is the flat wooden block at each end of a piano keyboard for?

One historical note that explains why they are as prominent as they are on grands: they relate to how the strings are laid out.

Modern pianos use overstringing, where the bass strings cross diagonally over the others to get more length into the case. That arrangement puts the frame and the plate in particular positions, and the key blocks sit in the space that arrangement leaves at each end of the keyboard.

On older instruments with straight stringing the proportions are noticeably different. If you look at a square piano or an early upright the blocks are there and much narrower, which is a nice illustration of a part whose size is set by something happening entirely elsewhere in the instrument.

It is called the key block, and its primary job is structural: it holds the key frame in position.

The keys sit on a frame that has to stay precisely located relative to the action and the strings. A shift of a millimetre or two puts keys out of alignment with the hammers. The blocks at each end clamp the frame laterally and are usually screwed down through to the key bed. On most instruments they can be removed, which is the first step in getting the action out for servicing — so if you have ever watched a technician start work, that is the piece they take off first.

The reason the case side cannot simply do that job is that the frame needs to be removable and adjustable. A fixed case wall would mean dismantling the instrument to service the action.

Does tuning to a slightly lower reference pitch actually affect listeners, or is it a myth?

Separating those two questions is exactly right, and they have different answers.

Can people hear a difference? Yes, in the trivial sense that the whole piece is slightly lower — about a third of a semitone. Play any recording pitched down by that much and most listeners will describe it as warmer or heavier, and pitched up as brighter. That effect is real, well known, and has nothing to do with the specific numbers. Musicians transpose for exactly this reason.

Does 432 specifically have a special property? No. There is no credible evidence for it, and the claims made in its support do not survive checking — the numerology about resonance and natural frequencies is constructed after the fact, and the historical claims about it being an ancient standard are not supported by the record.

So: a real perceptual effect from being lower, and no evidence for anything special about that number rather than any other slightly lower number.

How do you unlearn a mistake you have practised into place?

One idea worth knowing from wind and brass pedagogy that transfers directly: think about the sound you want rather than about the fingers.

The teaching, associated with a well-known orchestral player and teacher, is that trying to control the mechanics consciously interferes with a motor skill that operates better below conscious attention. What you can control is a clear mental picture of the intended result, and the body organises itself towards it.

In practice, for your bar: before playing, hear the transition in your head exactly as you want it — the timing, the tone, the shape of the phrase. Then play towards that image rather than thinking about which finger goes where.

This sounds mystical and is not. It is the difference between micromanaging a movement and giving it a target, and for many players it unblocks a passage that technical practice has stalled on.

Classical guitarists roll the finger for vibrato like a violinist — how does that work on a fretted instrument?

There is a third contributor that is not about pitch at all, and it explains why guitar vibrato is audible even when the pitch change is very small.

The rocking motion changes how the finger contacts the string and how energy is damped at the stopping point. That modulates timbre and sustain slightly, not just frequency. The ear reads that as expressive movement even where a tuner would barely register a change.

This is a general point about instrumental technique worth holding on to: several things people describe purely as pitch effects are partly timbral, and the two are hard to separate by ear because the ear was never designed to.

What key should I pick if I want a whole room to sing along?

One thing to check: whether the accompaniment can move.

If you are playing yourself, transposing may mean learning it in a new key, which is a real cost for a piece you have prepared. Capos solve this instantly on guitar; a keyboard with a transpose function solves it instantly too.

Worth knowing before you commit to a key, because the best key for the room is not much use if you cannot play it.
