On the money question the post actually asked: I tracked it over three years because I was suspicious of exactly this claim. Rotating two pairs, each pair lasted noticeably longer than a single pair used alone, but not double.
So the total cost came out slightly better than one pair at a time, and the real gain was that I always had a dry pair. That is the benefit nobody puts in the sales pitch and it is the one I would pay for.
