Adding why the old guides conflict: the ones from a few years ago describe a different tool being in charge of the interface, and following them on a current system produces two managers fighting over the same device.

The symptom is a configuration that works until something restarts and then silently reverts. If that is happening, you have both, not a broken config.

Per-device renderer is the detail that makes the whole thing possible and it is missing from every guide I read.
