Fear items is a better name than what I called them, which was the just-in-case pile.

The scale is genuinely the whole trick and it works because it removes the argument.

Everyone has a story about the item they were sure was heavy. Mine was a stove I agonised over, which turned out to be a rounding error next to the clothes I never wore. Written down in a list sorted by weight, the top ten items are always where the weight is and they are rarely the ones being discussed.

It costs the price of a kitchen scale and it is the only step on this list that makes every subsequent decision correct.
