Trial periods got longer, which is the underrated change. You can properly run one for a month before paying anything, and doing that with two candidates back to back is the only comparison that has ever worked for me.

It's a discipline problem that a watch makes much easier to solve. The feature you want isn't GPS accuracy, it's a configurable alert that buzzes when you drift outside a pace band, plus a data screen you can read at 30km with sweat in your eyes. Both are on essentially every dedicated running watch and on almost none of the cheap bands. Your phone can do it via an app talking to headphones, which works and is fiddly enough that you'll stop.
This is the precise mechanism of subscription creep in this category and it's extremely effective, because by month twelve the switching cost isn't money.
It varies a lot by brand and is worth checking rather than assuming. Garmin Connect is free for the core tracking, and Connect+ — around $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year — was launched as additive, with Garmin explicitly saying nothing previously free was moving behind it. On the other side, Fitbit Premium is what gates the deeper sleep and coaching material and it's being folded into Google Health Premium with the annual price going from about $80 to about $100. The very cheap band brands mostly don't charge at all, and you get whatever their app gives you.
The Android side is better on this specifically, with one caveat. Watches from phone makers tend to hold a feature or two back for their own handsets — sometimes an ECG, sometimes a body-composition thing — so a same-brand watch on a different Android phone is about 90% rather than 100%. Watches from the fitness-first brands are essentially phone-agnostic and will follow you across any change, which given what just happened to you sounds like your answer.
Then buy for the bike and stop worrying about it. I promise nobody in your office is grading your bag.
Same experience. It's a three-month education tool and after that it's jewellery with good alarms, which is fine as long as you buy it knowing that.
Year four. The things I use daily, in order: notification triage, silent alarm, timers, paying for things, and finding my phone. Health tracking is something I look at maybe monthly. Nobody sells you a watch on the silent alarm and the kitchen timer, and that is what earns the wrist space. If notifications-without-your-phone is the thing you want, that's a completely legitimate reason to buy one and it's the feature you'll use twenty times a day.

Not because of effort but because of the routine: two shots means grinding twice, and with a partner also wanting coffee it became four rounds of cranking before 8am. Alone, it would still be on the counter. With a household, I bought an electric and never looked back.
The screen is most of it. The always-on colour display is the expensive component in battery terms and it's what everyone photographs.
Different axis entirely: the G-Shock survives things the Garmin won't. I've watched a sports watch bezel take a chunk out of a scaffold pole and a resin G-Shock take the same hit and shrug. If 'destroyed two watches in three years' means impacts rather than water ingress, the resin case with recessed glass is doing something the metal-bezel sports watch simply isn't.

The rugged Garmin line splits into solar and AMOLED versions of the same model: the Instinct 3 Solar is quoted at over forty days in smartwatch mode, and Garmin says enough daylight can effectively keep it topped up in that mode indefinitely — which is real if you're outdoors all day, which you are. The AMOLED version of the same watch is quoted around eighteen days and drops to about seven with the screen always on. So: solar, non-AMOLED screen, and you genuinely stop thinking about charging.
Usually an add-on line on your existing account rather than a second full plan, but the price differs enormously by carrier and country. Get the actual number from your carrier before you buy any hardware.
Two viable routes and they fail differently. The dedicated kids' watch route is simpler to lock down and the hardware is usually mediocre — signal and battery are exactly where they disappoint, which matches what you found. What you keep is generally the optical heart rate sensor and the accelerometer, which is what step and sleep tracking runs on anyway — so the tracking is usually fine and the interface is the compromise. What you gain is battery measured in weeks or months rather than days, and that's a much bigger quality-of-life change than people expect.
