I have washed chicken under the tap my entire adult life because that is what I was taught at home, and apparently the advice is now the opposite. What I cannot tell is which of these kitchen and household rules are…
I stop working in about three years and would like income arriving smoothly rather than in four lumps. The obvious approach is buying quarterly payers across the three different cycles so something lands every month,…
I want to look at a standard acquisition report as a line chart aggregated by month rather than by day. Over a long period the daily view is unreadable noise and the shape I care about is the trend. This seems like it…
Rural road that is ice from December to March, then 25 km of highway that the province keeps clear. So my week is roughly a third genuinely icy and two thirds cold dry asphalt. Budget is not the constraint, tolerance…
First launch I have ever done. Day zero was 4,100 uniques and it felt incredible. Day four was 210. It has been sitting between 165 and 190 for a fortnight since, with one small bump. I knew there would be a drop, I did…
4060 Ti 16GB. The task is document extraction: about 3k tokens of prompt in, a JSON object with 12 fields out, several of them nullable. Runs unattended on a few hundred documents a night, so correctness matters more…
About 10k miles a year, nearly all motorway, and I want something I can run for at least three years without a nasty bill. I am mostly worried about walking into a timing belt or a hidden rust job on something that…
Noticed a pattern in my signups table: eleven accounts over four months, all Gmail, all the same string with the dots moved around. Same trial, same features, presumably the same person. A couple came from the same IP.…
Quoted just under USD 2,600 installed for a ducted whole house unit, against roughly USD 500 for two decent portables I could put in the basement and the upstairs hall. Three storey house, forced air already in place,…
About twenty minutes a night of voice practice in Portuguese with a model. Inside the app I sound great, because it waits, it never gets bored, and it understands me even when I mangle the verb. Then I get on a family…
Spent a weekend making a proper demo video. Screen recording, voiceover, cut down to 90 seconds, thumbnail, the lot. Put it directly under the headline replacing a static screenshot. Over the following three weeks…
Solo dev. Twelve services split across two boxes, one compose file each, plus a pile of shell scripts for deploys and a failover procedure I have written down and never actually tested. Kubernetes is obviously out of…
A few years ago a neighbour let a weed grow beside their house. Within a year it was as tall as the building, and it has now developed proper bark and a solid trunk. It stands about three metres from my fence. It sends…
Bare panel van, medium wheelbase high roof, bought in March, and I am at the point where the next step is irreversible. I have read the build blogs but those are all written by people who are pleased with themselves. I…
Monorepo, 11 packages, about 180k lines of TypeScript. takes 4m12s on a cold cache and it is now the longest thing in the pipeline. Format check is another 40s on top. Biome is obviously fast. My hesitation is rule…
Nine hours a day at a desk, 34, no diagnosed back problem, just a low ache that arrives mid afternoon. Current chair is a $280 mesh thing from a big box store, three years old, and the foam under the seat has gone flat…
I turn 18 in November and want to go in September with my own money, about €900 for everything on the ground. My parents are fine with it and will sign whatever needs signing. What I can't work out is what will actually…
Currently postgres 17 in compose next to the app, data on a mounted volume, to R2 nightly from a cron container. 8 GB and growing maybe 400 MB a month. Two person team, no ops person, we ship a lot. Someone on the team…
41 paying accounts, $340 MRR, no growth for about a year. Last month I put 4.5 hours into it: two support emails, one database version nag, and one broken CSV import from a customer whose own system exports something…
My eight year old asked what the nap in kidnap means and I had absolutely nothing. It clearly isn't sleeping. Then she asked whether napkin is the same nap, which felt like a reasonable guess and I suspect is a…
Cooked a 1 inch ribeye at 133F for two hours, dried it, then seared in cast iron with oil for about two minutes a side to get a crust I was happy with. Cut into it and there is a 4mm grey ring all the way around, which…
Coming from express, so I expected to see POST /api/something. Devtools shows POST /dashboard with a header, and the response body is a stream of numbered lines rather than JSON. Nothing in my code mentions /dashboard…
After months of use, the metal mesh in my press filter has fine coffee particles wedged between the fibres. Brushing both sides does not shift them. I tried soaking in dilute vinegar, following advice for cleaning metal…
Budgeted 42k, spent just over 50k in year one with no big one off purchases, no move, no new car. Categories all look slightly higher rather than one obviously blowing out. I tracked everything the same way I did while…
Light roast washed Ethiopian that makes a lovely floral V60. Cold brewed it at 1 to 8 in the fridge for eighteen hours, coarse grind, filtered through paper, then diluted one to one. It came out flat, slightly papery…
