Ask by room number, not by preference. "Somewhere quiet" gets you whatever is free; "room 412 or the same side of that floor" gets you 412 most weeks, because it is easier for them to say yes to something specific.
Also worth asking the front desk directly rather than the booking system. The system cannot make these promises and the person on the desk usually can, especially once they recognise you.
