Is a muslin supposed to look this bad or did I cut the wrong size

Draw horizontal balance lines on the toile: one across the front at bust level, one across the back at shoulder blade level, both parallel to the floor when the pattern is flat. Put it on and see where they tilt. Whichever end rides up is the side that needs length. It converts a mess of wrinkles into one clear instruction.

How long before scales stopped feeling pointless and started helping pieces

They transfer when you stop practising them as scales and start practising them as the specific thing you need. Running C major up and down twice in the same way every day for a year will not transfer, and you are right to be suspicious of it.

What to change. Give each session's scales one job. Today: absolutely even tone, listen for the thumb being louder. Tomorrow: the thumb crossing under with no bump and no gap. The next day: dynamics, quiet up, loud down. The day after: a rhythm, dotted, then reversed. Same ten minutes, but you are now practising a skill rather than a pattern.

The moment it clicked for me was reading a piece with a run of eight notes in it, recognising the shape as a scale I already had under my fingers, and playing it correctly on sight with the right fingering without working anything out. That is the whole payoff, and it arrives suddenly rather than gradually.

At four months with three keys, I would expect that moment somewhere in the next few months if you add keys steadily. Add one new key a fortnight and keep the old ones in rotation.

88 key weighted digital or a free 1920s upright for a small flat

Digital, given the flat, the neighbours and the move. The free piano is the more expensive option and it is not close.

What the free upright actually costs: moving it, which is 250 to 400 for professionals and more up a staircase to a second floor, then tuning, and a piano that has been in a garage for two years will need at least two tunings in the first year because it has to be pulled back up to pitch gradually. Then in eighteen months you pay to move it again or you give it away.

And the real risk: two years in a garage means uncontrolled humidity, which is what cracks pinblocks and soundboards. A piano with a failing pinblock will not hold tune at all, and there is no economical repair. That is why these instruments are free.

If you love the idea, pay a technician 80 to 120 to look at it before you accept it, and ask them specifically about tuning pin tightness and soundboard cracks. If they hesitate at all, walk away.

For 900 you can get a genuinely good weighted digital with a decent hammer action. Spend a little of it on a proper stand and an adjustable bench rather than an X frame, because the bench affects your technique far more than the sound engine does.

Neckline gapes about 2cm on every woven bodice I make

For a garment already made, you are not out of options. Unpick the facing, run a line of stay tape cut 3 percent short along the neckline and ease it on, or take a tiny 5mm dart in the facing only so the facing pulls the edge inward. Neither is invisible on close inspection but both stop the folding outward.

My left hand rushes every time I put hands together above 60 bpm

This is not a tempo problem, it is an attention problem, and the location tells you so. The left hand rushes exactly where the right hand gets busy, which means your attention leaves the left hand and it defaults to running its pattern as fast as it knows how.

Things that work, roughly in order of usefulness.

Play the left hand alone at your target tempo while singing or tapping the right hand rhythm. Now the left hand is being asked to hold steady against a busy foreground, which is the actual skill.

Play hands together but ghost the right hand, fingers moving over the closed keys or the key surface without pressing. Same coordination, no sound to hide behind.

Put the metronome on beats two and four only, or on the half bar. A click on every beat lets you drift between clicks and correct without noticing; a sparser click makes drift immediately audible.

And practise the two problem bars plus the bar before them as their own unit, twenty times, then join them back on. The bar before is where the acceleration starts even though the damage appears later.

I run out of things to say about four minutes into every conversation

Stop asking questions and start making statements. That is the whole thing.

A question puts the entire job of continuing on the other person and gives them nothing to grab. A statement hands them something. Compare: what do you do at the weekend, versus, I have been trying to learn to swim properly at 34 and it is humbling. The second one gives them four possible doors, learning as an adult, swimming, being bad at something, being 34.

The pattern I use is two sentences of my own, then a hook. Answer your own question first. If you would ask them about their commute, tell them about yours first, including the annoying part, then let them react. Ninety percent of what feels like conversational skill is just being willing to go first.

Pizza or money to explain fractions to an eight year old in twenty minutes

Money, because the thing she is stuck on needs a common unit and money hands you one for free.

Pizza is excellent for what a fraction is, and it is bad for comparing, because two pizzas cut into thirds and quarters are two different pictures and the eye cannot reliably judge them. Money is all the same unit, so two thirds and three quarters end up as two numbers you can put side by side.

Use twelve of something rather than a random amount, because twelve divides neatly by two, three, four and six, which covers almost everything at this age. Twelve coins, twelve counters, twelve grapes. Two thirds of twelve is eight, three quarters of twelve is nine, nine is more than eight, done. She can do that with her hands in about four minutes and she will not need to be told the answer.

Once that lands, the pizza comes back in usefully for equivalence, because two quarters visibly being one half is much better seen than counted.

And twenty minutes is too long. Do eight good minutes and stop while it is still going well.

Weekly board game night or a monthly hiking group for making friends after moving

Do both for eight weeks and drop whichever one you find yourself dreading on the day. Also, and this is the bit people skip: neither of these becomes friendship until somebody makes an invitation outside the structure. Getting a coffee, lending a book, come round and we will try this game. That is the actual skill, and no amount of attendance substitutes for it. Be the one who asks. It is a much smaller risk than it feels.

Fourth and fifth fingers collapse in scales after about ten minutes

Collapsing after ten minutes with forearm tightness beforehand is a fatigue signature, and fatigue at two years usually means the arm is not supporting the hand, so the small finger joints are doing structural work they were not built for.

Check the boring things first. Bench height, so that with your fingers on the keys your forearm is roughly level with or very slightly above the keyboard, and your elbow is not below key level. Bench distance, because sitting too close makes you pull your wrists in and lock the forearm. Most people who are self taught are sitting too low and too close.

Then the shape. Play a five note block chord, all fingers down together, and notice the natural arch of the hand and the feeling of the arm resting into the keys rather than the fingers holding the hand up. That is the shape you want to keep in a scale.

And stop at the first collapse. That moment is genuinely useful information, not a failure to push through. Ten focused minutes, two minute break, another ten. An hour of continuous playing at two years in is how people acquire injuries and habits that take longer to undo than they took to learn.

How do I leave a conversation at a work event without seeming rude

Worth saying plainly: nobody remembers your exit. They remember the conversation, and mostly they remember whether they enjoyed it. The exit line is a piece of social punctuation, like saying no worries. You are auditing yours because you were there for it, and they were not paying attention to it at all.

Sight reading falls apart the moment there are more than two flats

Where to get endless easy material: hymn books are excellent for this, four parts, predictable harmony, and they cover every key including all the flat ones. Lead sheets are good too. Old graded exam books from a charity shop cost almost nothing and give you a hundred short pieces you have never seen, which is exactly what the skill requires.

Diagonal drag lines from hip to waist on the back of my trousers

Before you commit, do the pinch test standing up. If you can pinch a fold of loose fabric under the seat and the drag lines relax when you pull the back waistband upward, it is short rise as described above. If pulling the waistband up makes it worse and the fabric was already loose, you have the opposite problem, a flat seat, and you need to remove length from the back crotch curve instead. Same symptom family, exactly opposite fix.
