Heat is what kills them, not utensils, and empty preheating on high is the fastest way to do it.

The egg test settled two arguments in my kitchen and the useful part is that it is repeatable: same pan, same heat, no fat, and you get a yes or no rather than an opinion.
I do it twice a year now. It has told me to keep a pan I was about to bin and to bin one that looked fine.
