It is gyroscopic precession, same as a spinning top. The angular momentum of the wheels resists any change in orientation, which is why a faster bike feels more stable.

Thighs also vary a lot by size now. The big ones sold in a tray are nearly double what a recipe from a decade ago assumed, so timings written for smaller pieces do not translate cleanly. Weigh them once and you will see what I mean.
And stop poking, genuinely. Every time you lift a plant to check the roots you set it back. Six weeks of leaving it completely alone will do more than anything you can actively do.
Twelve years is nothing for a dryer. The ones from that era are simpler and generally last longer than what you would replace it with, which will have a board in it that costs more than your repair quote when it fails.
Noise: most small office machines have a single quiet fan that never spins up for this workload, but the ones with a spinning hard disk still inside are audible in a quiet room. Pull the disk when it arrives and put in an SSD. Ten minute job with one screwdriver, and it is the difference between a bookshelf machine you forget about and one that annoys you every evening.
The add more springtails advice is right and people always underdo it. A single culture cup into an 18x18x24 is a starter, not a population. I seed two or three cups and then add a fourth a month later.

The battery format point is bigger than it sounds. Twenty devices means you are changing something roughly monthly forever, and AA lithium in a window sensor can go two or three years while a coin cell in the same spot does nine months.
Keep a backup culture in a tub on a shelf regardless. A takeaway container with charcoal or coco fibre, a bit of rice or yeast every couple of weeks, and you always have a reseeding source. It takes ten minutes to set up and removes this entire category of worry.

60C at idle means the case is doing its job of pulling heat out of the chip into a large piece of metal. A bare Pi with no heatsink idles about the same or lower and then shoots past 80 under load, which is the situation you actually want to avoid.
Buy beans somewhere with turnover rather than off the back of a big supermarket shelf. Nothing on the packet tells you when they were dried, only when they were bagged, and that gap can be years.
