A link that comes up and drops repeatedly is a different fault from no interface at all, and they get conflated constantly.

The version detail worth adding: this is almost always a kernel-age problem rather than a support problem. The driver exists, it is in the mainline kernel, and your distribution shipped a kernel from before it landed.
Which means the fix is often a newer kernel from your distribution's own backports rather than anything out of tree, and that is a much smaller commitment than compiling a module.
