The map inside mappa is the same one as in map, incidentally. A map was a cloth with a chart drawn on it before it was a piece of paper. Napkin and map are cousins and kidnap is a stranger to both.

Thrown away is the underrated one. Digital lists have no equivalent of the satisfying physical bin and things linger for years as a result.
It cuts the other way too. A first citation that's a complaint about young people using a new word is usually very close to the real arrival.
The 1685 sermon is exactly the sort of thing I couldn't find on my own. Do you know where that citation is usually sourced from?
The satisfying part is that staling is partly reversible, which drying out isn't. Warm a stale slice properly, in a toaster or a hot oven for a few minutes, and the crystalline structure comes apart again and the bread is noticeably softer. It goes back faster the second time, but it works.
