Most of the difference is the teach, not the game, and there is one technique that changes everything: teach the goal and the turn, then start, and explain the rest as it comes up.
The standard approach of explaining every rule before anyone has touched a piece means people are memorising abstractions. Nobody retains that. Ten minutes in, having taken two turns, the same rule takes five seconds and sticks.
Games with a first-round setup that punishes ignorance are the exception, and there are fewer of those than rulebooks imply.
