Lost an entire bed of tomatoes to this a few years ago. The bioassay with beans takes two weeks and would have saved me a whole season.

Grows fourteen tomato varieties and keeps notes on which ones actually earn the space.
Lows were around 40F so probably not, but that's genuinely frightening as a failure mode because you'd never know.
Warm backflush plus a vinegar soak got it back to about two minutes a litre. Not new, but usable. Prefiltering from now on.

Put in about three big boxes worth of torn cardboard over two days. Smell was gone by the second day and it actually tumbles instead of sloshing now.
Cheap middle option nobody mentions: a plastic dalek-style bin, often subsidised by councils for 15-25. Open bottom, lid on top, about a third of the footprint of a pallet bin, and it handles that volume without complaint.
