My under-desk pedal machine has a motor that moves my legs for me — is that exercise at all?

If what you wanted was actual activity during the working day, the thing to look for is a device with resistance rather than a motor.

An under-desk pedal unit with adjustable resistance and no motor is a different product and is what most people picture when they hear the description. You do the work, you can dial the difficulty, and at a low setting you can pedal for hours while typing without breaking concentration.

The honest caveat is that even those produce fairly modest effects at desk-compatible intensities. You cannot work hard enough to train while also doing your job, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What they do provide is a meaningful increase in daily energy expenditure and a lot less time spent completely still, both of which are worth having.

A standing desk with a walking pad is the other version of the same idea and gets a lot more movement in, at the cost of being harder to type on.

Is a push-up basically a bench press with your own bodyweight?

The muscles doing the pushing are the same, and the load is very different, and there is one extra component in the push-up that the bench press does not have.

The load is not your bodyweight. In a standard push-up your feet carry a substantial share and your hands carry roughly two thirds of you, give or take depending on proportions and hand position. So a push-up is closer to a bench press with about 65% of your bodyweight than with all of it. For most people that is a light bench press.

A push-up also trains the trunk. You are holding a rigid plank while pressing, so the abdominals and the muscles around the hips are working isometrically the whole time. That is genuine work the bench press does not ask for — and it is also the reason a push-up often fails at the middle rather than at the arms.

The shoulder blades move differently. On a bench they are pinned against the bench; in a push-up they are free. That makes the push-up arguably a more natural movement and a less isolated one.

After a very long ride I have burned far more than I ate — where does that mass physically go?

The mental image that makes it stick, if you want one: a burning log gets lighter, and the mass goes up the chimney.

The chemistry is genuinely the same — carbon compounds plus oxygen giving carbon dioxide and water — just at body temperature, in stages, with the energy captured rather than released as flame. We are slow, well-managed fires with lungs for chimneys.

Recovery days are supposed to be when you grow — so how does daily training in military basic training work?

The specific factors that make it work there and would not transfer to your training:

The population is selected. Young, generally healthy, and screened. Recovery capacity at twenty is not what it is at forty-five, and the people who cannot cope are removed from the sample, which makes the outcome look better than the method.

The starting point is low. Untrained people improve on almost any stimulus. This is the single biggest factor and it is temporary — the same programme applied to trained people produces very little.

The load per session is moderate. Sets of bodyweight exercises taken well short of failure, spread through a day, are far less damaging than a hard session in a gym. Frequency is high and per-session intensity is not, which is a legitimate way to organise training.

Nutrition is handled. Recruits are fed, substantially, on a schedule. That is doing more work than people credit.

Objects wear out faster the more you use them, so why does the body get stronger?

Your wear analogy is not entirely wrong, though, and knowing where it holds is genuinely useful.

It holds when the load exceeds the rate of repair. That is exactly what an overuse injury is. Tendons, cartilage and bone all remodel much more slowly than muscle, so a training load that muscles adapt to happily can outrun what a tendon can rebuild — which is why so many injuries in new runners and lifters appear a few weeks in, once the muscles have improved enough to let them do more than their connective tissue is ready for.

It holds for tissues with little or no repair capacity. Some structures do accumulate wear over a lifetime.

So the useful shape of the rule is: use drives adaptation up to the limit of the repair rate, and becomes damage beyond it. Almost everything in sensible training design — progression rates, rest days, deload weeks — is an attempt to stay on the right side of that line.

Why does every beginner programme say three days a week when I want to train six?

There is a real reason, and it is not about your commitment. It is about how often each muscle gets trained, which is the opposite of what the day count suggests.

A six-day split hitting two body parts per day means each muscle is trained roughly once a week. A three-day full-body programme means each muscle is trained three times a week.

So the programme you were told to do trains everything three times as often as the one you proposed. It is more frequent, not less. That is the whole answer and it surprises nearly everyone.

Frequency matters for beginners because the response to a session lasts a day or two, and because most of the early progress is learning the movements. Squatting three times a week produces far better technique after a month than squatting once a week does, and technique is what lets you keep adding weight later.

Is 10,000 steps a day enough on its own, or am I missing something at 42?

Honest assessment: it covers a lot and it leaves one clear gap, and the gap gets more important at your age rather than less.

What walking covers well. General activity levels, cardiovascular health at a moderate level, mood, sleep, joint mobility, and the sheer benefit of not being sedentary — which is the largest single health difference of all, and you have already banked it.

What it does not cover. Resistance training. Muscle mass and bone density decline gradually from the thirties onward unless something loads them, and walking does not provide enough load to prevent that. It is not a small omission — muscle and bone are what keep people independent and unbroken decades later.

General activity guidelines from health bodies reflect this: they recommend aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days a week, as separate items. You are comfortably meeting the first and not the second.
