The place the missing port actually costs you: daisy chaining two monitors from one output. That needs DisplayPort and there is no HDMI equivalent, so a budget monitor without it means a cable per screen back to the machine.

Not a problem for one screen. A real annoyance for three.

The royalty being small and the controller board being the real cost explains the whole pattern.
